It is the more accurate technology at this price point, it needs far less maintenance than a mechanical movement, and it keeps working whether you wear the watch every day or leave it in a drawer for a month. There is no winding, and nothing to service on a fixed schedule.
What accuracy actually looks like
Quartz movements are known for keeping time within a small number of seconds a month, not a day, which is why quartz has been the standard choice for reliable, low-maintenance watches for decades. You may notice your watch drift by a few seconds over several weeks; that is normal quartz behavior, not a defect, and resetting the time takes a few seconds using the crown.
Battery life, honestly
A quartz battery typically lasts a few years of normal wear before it needs replacing, depending on how often you wear the watch. You will know it is time when the second hand starts jumping in longer intervals instead of moving smoothly, or when the watch stops keeping time altogether. Neither of those is a sign anything is wrong with the watch itself, the battery has simply reached the end of its life, the same as any battery-powered device.
Getting the battery replaced
Any local jeweler, mall kiosk, or watch shop can swap a quartz battery in a few minutes, usually for a modest fee. - Wipe the case and bracelet down after a sweaty workout or a day in the sun; salt and sunscreen residue are harder on finishes than plain water
- Store it somewhere dry when you are not wearing it, rather than a damp bathroom shelf
- Keep it away from strong magnets, like phone cases and speakers, which can occasionally affect timekeeping on any watch, quartz or otherwise
Signs it is time for a check-up, not a replacement
If the crown feels loose, if the second hand starts skipping, or if you notice moisture under the crystal, those are reasons to get the watch looked at rather than reasons to assume the worst. Most of these issues are quick, inexpensive fixes when caught early.
Traveling with a quartz watch
Quartz movements do not care about time zones or how long the watch sits unworn in a drawer or a suitcase, which is one of their quiet advantages over automatics.
